Week 1: Civics and Policy

Updated: Dec 8, 2020

"The popular belief isn’t always the correct one."

With an election coming up, this week, we will learn about 3 different changes that could be made that would make it easier for citizens to participate in voting, as well as understanding the policies that may also be on the ballot!

ree

1. Rank Choice Voting: In some primaries, the candidate that is chosen doesn't have to earn a majority of the votes, just more than the others. This video dives into how using a Rank Choice Voting system all across the US can really help in representing the voices of the people. Additionally, this, combined with mail-in voting, could really enhance and empower the voting experience.

2. Plain Language: "Plain language (also called plain writing or plain English) is communication your audience can understand the first time they read or hear it." Many policies and contracts use over complicated language just to hide it's true intentions, or make it long enough so people don't even read what they are signing.

3. USPS: Learn about how an institution that is older than the United States, and is written into it's constitution is vital to aiding government, businesses, and democracy. See how it's role had evolved over the past 200+ years, and what forces are looking to aid it, and the others that are looking to dismantle it.

Call to Action! Are you familiar with your local policies that may affect your day to day life? Have you tried to see what changes to your county's voting policies are up for a vote? Take this week to learn more about what is being done in your local community!
