Week 35: Race in the USA

"So think carefully when you speak it, because truth is a weapon."

Much of American History is centered around, impacted by, or has been decided by the races of the individuals who live in this country. The determination of one's race has been shaped by laws, culture, violence, and money. In this week's Tuesday Fix, we will be exploring how race came to be in America, and how race has shaped the country as well.

1. The Origin of Race in the USA: "Do you believe that your race correlates to your skin tone? Because that wasn’t always the case. So how did Americans come to believe that race equals certain visible physical characteristics such as skin color and hair? And why is it that certain ethnic groups that were once considered “non-white” became reclassified as “white”? Watch the episode to find out."

2. 'Indian' or 'Native American'?: Words are often what we and the culture around us make them, but how accurate these words are, and how others use them are just as important. CGP Grey explores the origins and usage of these words in American history.

3. Why Do We Say “Asian American” Not “Oriental”?: "The word Oriental is hundred of years old, so why do Americans no longer use the word “Oriental”? And how did the word “Asian American” take its place? Watch this week’s Origin of Everything to find out."

Call to Action! Possibly now more than ever, race is yet again at the center stage of policies, laws, culture, and the future of this nation. Try your best to learn all you can about the history of race in this country, as history, or lack of it, will influence the future of race decisions in the USA and the world.
